This 3-point course describes some of the theory and engineering aspects of Web search engines.
Grading: the grade in this course is determined by 4 homework assignments (no exam). Assignments will have a mixture of individual items and items to be done in pairs. The tentative schedule is as follows:
1. (20 points, after week 2) Problem sheet
2. (25 points, after week 6) Programming assignment – tweaking the Apache Lucene open-source search library
3. (20 points, after week 10) Problem sheet
4. (35 points, after semester) Final assignment - may involve reading papers in the field and programming items
