Hi all, Your final grades have been published. The full formula for the grades is below. Note that HW was given a 60% weight, classwork was given 30%, and the final competition was given 11 points where the minimum is 5 (if you solved 0 questions) and the maximum is 11 (so in theory you could get 101 points, which will be rounded down to 100). An additional bonus of 1-3 points was given to the 3-1 places in the final competition, respectively. Finally for every missing class that was not "made up" (except the first) you get a 5 points penalty. Classwork is calculated based on the number of *correct* problem solutions submitted in the lesson assignments. For any questions or concerns, please email Noa. This week our lesson will be a simulation towards the final competition. This means: 1. The lesson will be extended by an hour (until 19:20). 2. You must use the computer stations available in the farm. Raanan Shapira and I will verify that there are enough working stations before the lesson and we will mark them for you. You must make sure you know your username and password to the windows station. If not - please visit the "yoatzim" room tomorrow to reset your password. 3. Internet access will not be allowed. You may bring 25 printed pages (see competition regulations). Some of you have not yet sent me a cool teamname. Reminder: the final competition will take place next Friday 28.7. The contest regulations have been posted in course materials, *please read them carefully*. I strongly advise that you prepare for this competition over the weekend. Nothing can prepare you better than just solving lots of questions. Note that you can bring 25 pages with whatever algorithms you desire (see regulations), so plan time to prepare those as well. To add some fun, you can choose team names that will be displayed in the scoreboard (instead of "team X"). Please keep it short and alpha-numeric. Tomorrow's trip to Google | |

Hi all, Reminding you that tomorrow we are visiting Google in TLV for a joint activity. There will be no lab lesson obviously =]. The bus leaves from outside Taub (floor 0) at 14:30 sharp. If you are running late - call or text me at 0546344784 so that we won't leave without you. If you arrive independently, aim to be there at 16:00. Preparations: Please bring your laptops! One per person is optimal but if it's not possible then bring at least one per team. Make sure you have a working development environment on your laptops (or install one. Eclipse or Netbeans are good options to install quickly). Also make sure you have an account for both sites: https://icpcarchive.ecs.baylor.edu/ http://uva.onlinejudge.org/ In case the first one falls we'll use the other one as backup. Some info to get you excited: we will mix you with the Googlers to create joint teams. We'll have a large pool of questions, and each team will work on a *different* question. The goal will be for all of us to solve as many questions as possible together. As an added bonus - the more questions we solve, the more fun stuff we get (food, beer, sweets, special surprises...). Because of trouble with the live-archive website, I am giving a further final postponement until Thursday 6.6. Unfortunately the performance of this website is not within my control, the overload on the server is due to the ICPC world finals coming up in 30.6, which means this is going to be the situation for a while. I have no better solution for you than to check the server every day and resubmit your code when possible. With this in mind, HW2 will be the last official homework assignment of the semester. On the bright side - next lesson we will work with a local competition server! So at least during the lesson these problems will not persist. See you soon, Noa |

Online Judge back up | |

Hi guys, The online judge is back up and working, please take advantage of this to proceed with the homework assignment. I am very hopeful that by our next lesson our local server will be working and we can have a proper competition in the lesson (with a live scoreboard =]). With this in mind - participation in the lesson was very low yesterday. I realize many of you had midterms and such, but in any case I strongly encourage you to come to the next lesson, and at least let your partner know if you won't be coming so that they won't be surprised. As a student in the Technion’s competitive-programming workshop, Google Israel R&D center is pleased to invite you to participate in our joint "code-off" event, fun team coding, students with engineers vs the code! I'd like to address several emails I've gotten regarding homework 1. The goal of this assignment is to quantify your capabilities individually, for this reason it is important that they will not be too simple. Students who find the assignment too difficult, can submit less than 8 questions and still get a very decent grade. Finally to put things in perspective, the two future assignments will be in teams of 3, hence the workload will be cut down by a third. |

1. Our next lesson (in two weeks, 23.4) will be a guest-workshop run by Kolman Vornovitsky - the founder of this course and currently working at Google. We will meet in the GSO club, where we had the speed-dating lesson (located under the main library. From the entrance of Michlol walk left towards the grass square, you will see it). The lesson will be at the regular time 16:30-18:20, as this is still the best time for the vast majority of the class according to the poll. 2. Our visit to the Google TLV campus (are you excited yet? I know I am) will be on 11.6. This is a great opportunity to get a first-hand glimpse of one of the best workplaces in the country in our field, connect with Google employees, and just have some outside-the-technion fun. The main activities will be a joint coding-session with Googlers (similar to our lab lessons), a tour of the insane offices, and obviously free food =]. We will leave the Technion by organized bus at 14:30 (you can also get there independently if you wish - plan to arrive by 16:00). 3. The final competition! (Now you must be excited) will take place on 28.6 (Friday), at 9:00-14:00. More details will come later, but for now put this date in your calendars in big bold letters please. Note that our last lesson on Tuesday 2.7 will be canceled. The previous lesson on Tuesday 25.6 will be the simulation for the competition, which might extend by an extra hour (until 19:30 instead of 18:30). Noa |

I already posted some questions which I answered by email, which I think you can all benefit from. Note that you can post anonymously, this means that the other students will not know who you are. Hi gang, This week we are meeting in the computer farm (room 018), where we will hold all future meetings unless otherwise published on this website. You will be working in teams of three *of your choice*, preferably these will be the teams you work with all semester (though I won't prevent you from switching later). If you still haven't finalized your team, now's the time to do so. Please make sure that at least one member of your team has a working password to the farm's windows computers and a working account on the livearchive site. It would also be better if at least one of you arrives 5-10 minutes early to log into the computer, open visual-studio etc. Our subject this week will be dynamic programming, so I highly recommend taking 10 minutes to refresh your memory on the subject before class. Next meeting and first HW | |

Hi everybody, Our next meeting will be at the GSO club, which is located under the main library (next to the senate building). It will be a sort of speed-dating session with problem solving, in which you will get a chance to meet the entire course and find partners, so bring your friendly face =]. Even if you already have two partners it will be fun (and mandatory). The first homework is published on the site, due date is 2.4. It shouldn't take you very long, so I suggest to start early and get it over with. I advise all of you to read the course's info sheet, under Syllabus, for info about the factors affecting your grade, attendance issues and the late submission HW policy. Good luck, Noa |
