Will this course count as a project or a seminar?
No. |
What will be the format of the workshop?
The workshop will be held mostly in the computer farm in Taub, where you will practice solving problems from previous competitions and submitting them to an online judge. As in the competition, you will work in teams of three, where each team uses only one computer. |
So do we need to find a team before signing up?
Absolutely not. At the beginning of the semester, there will be several lessons where you can meet the rest of the class and find teammates. You will only have to choose a team in the second part of the semester. |
How and when will the competition at the end of the semester take place?
The competition will be very similar to the official ACM-ICPC format. You will have 5 hours to solve as many out of 10 problems as you can (teams of three, one computer per team). The competition will take place in the last week of the semester, as usual at the Taub computer farm. |
What will the winning team win?
The winning team will fly to Spain to represent the faculty and the Technion in the upcoming SWERC (South West Europe Regional Contest), a part of the worldwide ACM-ICPC (International Collegiate Programming Contest). |
What programming languages are used in the competition? And in the workshop?
The official languages used in ACM-ICPC are C++, C, and Java. You can use any of those languages in the workshop, but you don't need to know them all (C++ will be enough). |
What will the grades be based on?
The grades will be based on homework, attendance in the workshops, your achievements in the workshop, and the final competition, not necessarily in that order. There will be no final exam. |

Will everyone who registers be able to attend the course?
That depends. Last year we had 56 students, which led to an overcrowded classroom. This year we want to avoid that, so we might restrict registration based on grades average and prerequisites, or open two classes. So it's a good idea to have a back-up plan in case you are not accepted to the course. That being said - if you want to take the workshop, please sign up even if you're not sure you will make the cut. Don't make the decision for us. |
I'm a student at another faculty, can I sign up for the course?
Yes, use the registration form. As noted - registration is not guaranteed for all students who sign up, so have a backup plan. |
I'm a masters student, can I sign up?
Yes. We are not sure yet if the course will be open to masters students, but the signup sheet will help us make that decision, so if you are interested please sign up. |
What are the prerequisites?
The only necessary prerequisites are Algorithms 1 and Data Structures. The Mathematics faculty's algorithm course is also OK (along with Data Structures). |
I already took the course, can I sign up again?
You cannot retake the course, but you can compete at the end-of-year competition for your chance to represent the Technion in SWERC. If you are interested, please email noako@cs during the spring semester. |
Is there a lecture and a tutorial?
No, there is only a 2-hour weekly meeting in workshop format (see above). The workshop will be run by Noa Korner. Prof. Barequet is the academic supervisor of the course, he will not be teaching frontal hours. |
My question is not answered here...
