Exams are checked and returned to the secretarian. The final grade will be calculated in the following way: Factor=7 HW_AVG = 0.25*(HW1+HW2+HW3+HW4) Moed_A_Factor = Moed_A+Factor Final_A = (Moed_A_Factor>54)? (0.65*(Moed_A_Factor)+0.35*HW_AVG) : Moed_A_Factor If you want to submit an appeal you should put the copy of the exam and the appeal to my (Leonid's) box on the 5th floor. The whole exam will be rechecked (and not only the question you appeal about). Pay attention, that we have given points even in the cases where the answer was partialy wrong or was not complete. You may loose these points in the appeal. Therefore, as you can get lower grade after the appeal, we recommend you to check whole the exam before submitting an appeal. |

The dry part and the dry checking of a wet question of HW3 has been finished (70% of the hw3 grade). In order to let you see your mistakes before the exam the hws will be returned tomorrow to the cells. Pay attention, that the grade that you will see is out of 70 and not 100. The grades for the wet part will be published later. The most common mistakes: Question 1 part a, 1: not locking mutex in sem_getvalue function. Notice, that despite the fact that we only read sem's value here, other function change its value. Therefore we must lock during read as well. Question 1 part a, 4: even if both mutex and cond_var are FIFO, the whole semaphore is NOT FIFO. The reason is that thread waiting on cond_var will need to wait on mutex again after signaled, and it may happen that other thread, which arrived later, is already waiting on the mutex and will acquire the semaphore before it. See the published solution for the detailed example. Question 1 part b, 1: The main difference between semaphore and cond_var is that cond_var does NOT have memory. If it is signaled and no one is currently waiting - the signal is ignored and is not remembered (slide 19 in the tutorial). As opposite, semaphore has memory. This was the main difficulty of this question and the majority of students have missed it completely. Detailed solution of the dry part of HW3 will be published as well. I strongly recommend to see the remarks. You can come to the reception hours, in case you have some questions or you disagree with the grade you got. |

As you know, Eyal has been in miluim. Therefore he has not checked the dry part (has not finished executing the tests). However, the wet part and the wet checking of a dry question has been finished (70% of te hw2 grade). In order to let you see your mistakes before the exam the hws will be returned tomorrow to the cells. Pay attention, that the grade that you will see is out of 70 and not 100. The most common mistakes: Question 2 part c: the correct answer is 9.5 (and not 10). Question 3 part a: yeild() has no effect on the epoch's length! Question 3 part b and c: the question is biased. Means that the following criteria for choosing the correct a was wrong: 140*max_prio<150*min_prio. Due to technical problems we ask all students that have made an electronic submission and do not have their verification codes send me (to my email) the file that you have submitted. The naming convension is :ID1-ID2-ID3.zip. For example: 333333333-444444444-555555555.zip. (in case there are only 2 students the name should be ID1-ID2.zip) Pay special attention not to create a new zip, but rename the original one. We will not publish our tests. However, anyone that want to check why he failed the test/compilation will get the chance. We will set a reception hour later (after 15.01 as Eyal in miluim). Pay attention, that for each hw we will set such a reception hour. We will NOT hold additional reception hour for same hw. So make sure to send one representative (if you want to appeal). Pay additional attention, that we will use the files that you have sumited only. No "small changes" will be accepted. |

Dear students. We really do understand that it is hard time for you now with the midterms. However, we can't postpone the submission date for the following reason: the (faculty) regulations forbid us to publish a HW with submission date after the last studying day. If we give 3 weeks for each HW we have exactly the needed time (+2 days for late submissions, like miluim). Therefore, we just can’t postpone the submission date of the HW 2, as it will leave us no time for the remaining HW’s. We wish you good luck with your midterms and we hope you will succeed with the submissions you have to make. |

HW1 submissions mistakes | |
| As it is written in the syllabus and in the hw1, the hw should be printed. All groups that have submitted handwritten version will receive significantly lower points for the written parts of the assignment. Next time we will not check the handwritten works. |

Haifa Linux Club (haifux) | |

For the last several years the Haifa Linux Club (haifux) has been conducting a series of introducary lectures to Linux as well as a lecture about development tools in the Linux environment. The lectures are given free of charge in the Taub building (computer science dept.). The object of the lectures is to inform and introduce alternatives (we do not try to convert anyone), and your students may get to know more IDEs, or even learn how to install Linux (if they wish to do so) on their computer. This can help them studying your course, as having a (free and legal) UNIX machine at their home along with good IDEs and helping utilities (such as valgrind) can lift their programming skill. The "software development on linux" lecture will take place on Mon. 14/11, 18:30, Taub 3. The "welcome to linux" lecture series will start on Mon. 21/11, 18:30, Taub 1. A preliminary assignment was published in the homework section. Although this assignment is not for submission, you are recommended to finish it until 13.11. The assignment will prepare you to work with VMWare, and it includes important details that you will need for performing the next assignments in the course. Assignments in the course should be submitted in groups of 3, and we encourage you to form the groups now, and not wait for the first (real) assignment. You can use the "Find a partner" section in the website for this cause. If you intend to use VMWare in the dormitories, pay attention to the notice in the last page of the assignment. |
