A recommended lecture by M. O. Rabin | |
A special Maths Club lecture sponsored by the Faculties of Mathematics and Computer Science. Title: Provably Unbreakable Encryption and Everlasting Secrets. Speaker: Prof. Michael O. Rabin, Harvard University and Hebrew University (Michael Rabin is a winner of the Turing Prize which is the most prestigious prize in Computer Science). Place: Churchill Auditorium. Time: Wednesday, June 21, 2006, 16:30. Abstract: Modern encryption is based for its security on unproven assumptions such as the intractability of factorization or the computation of discrete logarithms. Improvements in the design of algorithms and new technologies such as Quantum Computers may break these encryptions. Three approaches were suggested to overcome this problem. Quantum Cryptography, the Bounded Storage Model and, more recently, the Limited Access Model. The first two solutions are encumbered by practical and cost limitations. We shall describe a realization of provably unbreakable encryption based on the Limited Access Model within a network of computers which is readily implemented. |

Next Tutorial | |
In the upcoming tutorial we will continue to explore strong notions of secure encryption (CCA-1). We will rely on the material of the previous tutorial. Hence, you are asked to review this material (especially, the definition of semantic security). You are also welcome to go over the material of the upcoming tutorial that will be based on Jonathan Katz's lecture notes. (here) |

A recommended lecture | |
On this upcoming Sunday (2/4) in room 337/8 at 14:00, Prof. Eli Biham is going to give a talk about How to Make a Difference: The History of Differential Cryptanalysis The talk will cover the first few months of the development of differential cryptanalysis, and how it evolved from a "nice observation" with respect to FEAL-4 into a fundamental cryptanalytic technique. You are all invited, and encouraged to forward this message to whomever may be interested. The lecture assumes some understanding of differential cryptanalysis (even though you are not required to know the gray book by heart). |
