Homework Submission Deadlines | |

Dear Students, I want to address a recent increase in requests for homework extensions, many of which have lacked valid justification. To be clear, extensions will only be approved in cases of prolonged reserve duty or illness, with proper documentation required. Welcome to “Introduction to Bioinformatics” – Important First Steps | |

Dear students, I am excited to be your TA for “Introduction to Bioinformatics” this semester. Through our tutorials, we will explore the practical side of bioinformatics, complementing the theoretical material covered by Dr. Aran in the lectures. We’ll work with real biological data, uncovering meaningful insights that make a genuine impact in the fields of biology and medicine. The practical tools and skills you gain will be essential for completing homework assignments throughout the semester and for the final project. The tutorials will be conducted in live Zoom meetings. I will share the meeting link and relevant details on the course website before each class. Preparing for Our First Session: Our primary tool for this exploration will be R, a powerful and popular programming language among, statisticians, data scientists and bioinformaticians. To ensure you are well-prepared for our first session, please: 1. Install R and Rstudio (a user-friendly IDE for R) by following the instructions below: https://rstudio-education.github.io/hopr/starting.html 2. Familiarize Yourself with R: While our first tutorial will introduce R and RStudio, prior exposure is highly recommended. Explore R tutorials on YouTube to find one that suits your learning style. 3. Learn About R Packages: Packages significantly extend R's capabilities, please take a few minutes to understand the concept of packages as described at: https://rstudio-education.github.io/hopr/packages2.html For starters, we'll use the 'tidyverse' package collection. Install it in RStudio using install.packages("tidyverse"). You can discover more about these packages on the tidyverse website: https://www.tidyverse.org/packages/ Tutorial Materials: I will upload an R Markdown file with the code we’ll use to the course website one day before each tutorial. Dear students, Welcome to the Introduction to Bioinformatics course. We are excited to have you join us this semester as we explore the fascinating intersection of biology and data science. We are still adapting to the current situation, and as for now, the course will run in the following format: - Each week, you will receive a recording of the lecture (from last year) at the beginning of the week. - I will host an open Zoom session every Wednesday, 11:30-12:30, for questions and discussions. - Tutorials with Almog will be live on Zoom, with recordings available afterward For those who are currently on reserve duty, or expect to be called for such duty during the semester, please email our TA, Almog Angel (ualmog.angelatcampus.technion.ac.il), so we can make appropriate arrangements.
