Question 3 was rechecked for all students because of ambiguity in the question (there was no constraint on what should be returned for samples with missing values in case they are mapped to both positive and negative leaves). Dear students, Some information regarding the exam: You are allowed to bring any printed material. New slides on decision tree learning can be found at the lecturer's page, linked from the [Course Material \ Lectures] page on the course site. This semester we also had a new lecture on CSP. The lecture slides are available here: http://aima.eecs.berkeley.edu/slides-pdf/chapter05.pdf However, the exam will NOT include questions on CSP. The exam will also NOT include the material from the tutorial on automatic generation of heuristic functions. Everything else, taught in the lectures or in the tutorials IS included in the exam. This week's classes (10/2, 11/2) are cancelled

Dear students, This week's classes (lecture and tutorials) will not take place. We will conduct a rehearsal tutorial (which was the planned material of this week's tutorials) before the exam (Mar 4th). In order to find a time that will be convenient to most of the students, please email Haggai the times during 22/2-2/3 in which you are unavailable and cannot attend this tutorial. Try to minimize these times, e.g. include exam times but not working times. Please write a sequence of lines of such times and use the following format for each line (so that your input can be processed automatically): d/m p where d is the day-of-month (1 or 2 digits), m is the month (1 digit) and p is the part of day (0 for the entire day, 1 for 9:00-12:30, 2 for 12:30-16:30, 3 for 16:30-18:00). Ex2 update

Dear all, 1. A request regarding the submitted programs: Some of you have submitted your program in multiple files (which is perfectly okay) with generic names such as AlphaBeta.h/cpp or Node.h/cpp (which may cause problems). During the compilation of two players for a game, all the files are put in the same directory (your #include directives request the .h files to be in the same directory as the calling file), so files with generic names may cause collisions. As I don't really want to manually update your files before running the tournament, please use the following schema for files: _id1#_id2#_filename.ext, so that file names will differ from each other. Also, use namespaces or the _id1#_id2# prefix in classes' names. Those who have already submitted their program are requested to submit it again with these changes. 2. Some of you have experienced difficulties connecting to CSL1 today (and maybe in other days as well). From what I could understand from the running processes on CSL1, this situation was caused because of people running this homework with multiple instances of their program allocating over 2GB of memory which caused many memory swap actions that slowed the server to a crawl. So if you see your program uses too much memory, please stop it so that CSL1 will be usable for other people (and anyway, this means you don't follow the limitation of using no more than 100MB of memory). Dear all, A PDF with common remarks for Ex1 was published in the exercise section. It contains a few remarks that repeated themselves in several assignments. You are advised to read them now, and take them into consideration during the finalization of your second exercise. Personal remarks will be published on Tuesday, so you are allowed to submit Ex2 on Wednesday. It is now a member of the abstract Player class (m_moves_limit), and is initialized during the construction of this class. Also a minor change: *Player::setName is now a pure virtual member of Player (just in case you forget to set it in your player's class). Haggai |

Ex2 update

Dear Students, As some of you have noticed, the current rules of the game might lead to rather boring games of "you add I drop" ending with a draw (that is, there is a strategy for both players to force a draw with minimal planning of moves). To prevent this type of game play, the rule of DROP has been changed in the following way: A player may use a DROP action on a column that has at least 2 pieces (rather than 1 as was the original rule). I hope this complicates things enough so that we don't have to use a more complex way of avoiding easily forced draws. The game code package has been updated to reflect this rule change (ConnectNBoard::isLegalMove). Also, the game code package has been updated for the following bug fixes: 1. ConnectNBoard::getSuccessors erroneously started from column 1 rather than 0. 2. ConnectNBoard did not calculate sequences correctly (some diagonals, some mid board sequences). 3. ConnectNGame did not calculate game results correctly (DRAW by MOVE_LIMIT). Please update your code accordingly. Regards. Haggai |

Note minor biological inaccuracy in the Ex1
|
We were pointed out that reversed goal sequences should NOT count as successful inserts to the DNA (as opposed to the example in the exercise). You must have K goal sequences in their original direction to complete the exercise. You can still reverse any other enzyme, aiding sequence etc. We remind you to check the FAQ every once in a while. 19/11 Wednesday tutorial will not take place

Dear students, As you may have noticed, there are signs announcing a rally of the Technion Teaching Staff Organization (TSO). During the rally there will be no teaching by the TSO members, including me. I was only now informed that the rally will take place on Wednesday 19/11 during 14:30-16:30, and not as written on the signs. Therefore this week's Wednesday tutorial will not take place. You are advised to attend Danny's tutorial instead or my reception hour (Wed. 10:00-11:00 or any other time which is not during the rally [but please phone/email first to make sure I'll be in my office]). Please stay tuned to further announcements, as if the rally will again change time the tutorial will take place. This rally is a warning strike as part of the struggle of the national junior academic staff organization against the universities who fail to implement the collective wage agreement signed by initials between the universities and the academic staffs orgnizations.
