Moed A -- Scanned notebooks and Appeals

Hi all, The scanned notebooks are available. Some notes about the scans and appeals: - I marked with a blue pencil, so in some exams it may be difficult to spot my comments, but if you lost marks -- there are comments. - Appeals policy: 1. You may appeal by email until **Thursday 27.8.2026, 23:59**. 2. In your appeal, write your full name and ID, and anything related to your appeal. No need to attach the exam. 3. Some recommendations regarding the appeals: 3.1 For the most part, I was not harsh in grading the exams. It is extremely unlikely that I'll accept arguments of the form "I lost too many marks on this mistake". It is possible, however, that I will become convinces that the mistake is worse than I thought, and take away marks. 3.2 See some common mistakes below. If your mistake is common, it is extremely unlikely I'll accept an appeal on it. 3.3 Basically, appeal if I missed something in your answer. Otherwise don't. 4. Lastly, if you're not appealing, and this is the last message you'll read from this course -- I hope the course was interesting and fun! Good luck in whatever comes next. Some common mistakes: Q1: The most common mistake is to use a pumping constant that is too small (n+1 or n+k) -- this does not ensure that there is an accepting state *within* the cycle. Q2: Most mistakes were in proving membership in NP. This is not trivial. Just writing that you "guess a witness and check" is not enough. Much more detail is expected. Q3a: The most common mistake were constructions that do not accept a^\omega. This might seem like a minor point, but it's not: without it, it's just the same automaton we saw many times in class. Q3b: The most common mistake was writing things that are just not S1S. E.g., formulating the question in first order logic, ZFC style. This is not an answer, it's just writing the question in formal notation. The second common mistake was forgetting the words: writing a formula that says "there is at most one accepting run". Run on what? Q4: The common mistake was trying to actually come up with an algorithm, instead of reducing to Buchi games. This invariably led to partially-defined solutions, which cannot be checked for correctness, and anyway fail the requirement of having all the constructions precisely defined. |

Hi all, Moed A grades are online. I'll send the marked exams for scanning on Sunday, so it'll be a few days before the scans are available. Grades and factor: - "ExamARaw" is your exam grade. - "ExamAFactored" is with the factor, which was +9 points. - "FinalA" includes the weighted average with your exercise grades. I will publish the solution on the website in a few minutes. Please have a look. |

Exam A -- information

Hi all, The exam will take place on 18.8 at 9:00. The exam is 3 hours long. The exam has 4 questions. Standard instructions: - You may answer in English or in Hebrew. - You may use without proof any result we have seen in class, but you need to state the result precisely and carefully. - You may *not* use any external material. - Write in a blue or black pen (not a pencil, and not a red pen). Special instructions: 1. I won't be able to physically attend the exam. Instead, Sarai Sheinvald will be around. 2. If you have any questions, we will use the question-slip system (you write your question on paper). I will be able to answer remotely. Ex4 assumption for Q4
|
Hi all, In order to solve Q4, you may assume that if Player 0 wins in a Rabin game, then she has a *memoryless* winning strategy, This is not true for Player 1, by the way. The proof of this fact is fairly identical to the proof of Q3 (which is not for submission anyway), so you shouldn't even feel like you're assuming something out of nowhere. Hi all, Due to a conference, I need to make some changes in the lectures towards the end of the semester. The changes are: Lecture on Sunday 5.7 is cancelled. Lecture on Sunday 12.7 is cancelled.
