A message from Spring semester's staff to Students who took Moed B
According to Technion regulations, students are required to submit HW in all courses they might take during the semester. for students who took the Moed B in DS this semester, this includes next semester's first assignment. However, as the deadline of the first dry assignment for next semester was one day after the Moed B and we are aware that some students who attended Moed B are in fact already past the deadline, we will allow the students who took the Moed B to submit Dry 1 until one week after the announcement of the Moed B grades. Note that due to this significant postponement, no further postponements will be given, for any reason. Also, note that you will be required to submit the first wet assignment on time. Good luck in the upcoming semester, Course Staff |

A few announcements and clarifications about the moed A grades and appeals
1) The factorA grade is the exam grade, after factor. Notice that factorA is presented after rounding, because of the grades system's limitation in presenting fractions. The non-rounded value is used in calculating your final grade. Please do NOT send us messages saying "according to my calculation, I got X.500001 and should therefore get X+1". (unsurprisingly, we got no messages saying "you erred in my favor and gave me 1 point too many") 2) If you plan on appealing, feel free to do so, by submitting a formal appeal form (found at http://www.cs.technion.ac.il/undergraduate/additional/forms/appeal.pdf ), along with a full copy of your exam (add the draft book only if it contains solutions). Note that appeals which do not follow the guidelines specified will not be checked. 3) "Appealing without appealing" (This message has become somewhat of a classic, so we repeat it here for future generations to enjoy...) Though this is not your first semester at the Technion, we would like to clear some things up: - Do not send us emails asking: "I want to write <Content of your appeal> as my appeal. Am I right?". Besides the obvious insult to our intelligence, part of the learning process is being able to determine whether your solution is correct or not. We will not help you write your appeal. - Do not send us your exam and ask us where you can appeal, or if we can find places where you can appeal. This may seem trivial to most of you, but perhaps not to all of you. - Do not ask us "Will you check the whole exam if I decide to appeal?", when you clearly know the answer. - If we miscalculated your exam grade, appeal and you will get the points you deserve. There is no need to warn us by mail that "You miscalculated my grade. I am going to appeal. Be prepared", since we are always prepared. As you already know, we have Unagi: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ev_ob4mVwg. Regards, Course Staff |

Correction to Wet2 grades
A few students have sent questions about their code failing to compile, although their code compiles fine on t2. Indeed, we compiled the code on another linux server, with (apparently) different versions of gcc/g++, which caused these errors. We ran the tests again, and the grades of these students have been corrected, with a mail sent to them (those of them that submitted a submissions.txt file). We apologize for the confusion. Congrats on the new grades. Regards, Course Staff |

Wet 2 Graded | |
The results are online and have also been sent to you via email. Those of you who haven't received an email from us or did not receive a grade for the assignment must have submitted their assignment wrong (as in, not according to the guides we published). Each test (except the STL test) is worth 5 points, the dry section is worth 50 points. In addition, a 10 point factor was added to your grade. The tests we used can be found under the Assignments tab. Dan will hold two appeal sessions for this assignment: - on Tuesday 22.1 (after the exam), 14:30-16:30, in his office. - on Sunday 27.1 (first day of the semester), exact time TBA. - You are allowed to make minor changes to your code. Each change you make will cost several points from your grade. Significant changes to your code won't be accepted. - Students who had problems with the submission (submitted the assignment in a subfolder, wrong submissions.txt file...) should also come to the appeal session. There is no need to contact us via email first. Please note 27.1 will be the last date to appeal about this assignment. Wishing you a relaxing weekend, Course staff. |

Dry 3 checked | |
Dry assignment 3 has been checked and graded. Grades are available online and the assignments were returned to the secretariat. As before, please read the comments, even if you got 100 because of the printed bonus. Some common mistakes, that were abbreviated: Question 3: AVG: Did not use universal hashing, and therefore had complexity average on input, rather than average over coin tosses. Question 5: NTB: No Tie Breaker: The suggested algorithm did not handle the cases of multiple appearances of the same elements (specifically, the value of the k-th closest element to the median). Question 6: NR: No Reverse: Did not insert the digits in reverse order in part B. Regards, Course Staff |

A remark about wet 2 assignment
I get a lot of questions about the method GetHandlingServerId of the following form: "We want to use data structure X in order to support the implementation of this method, but in class we saw that this data structure will give time complexity of O(logK) in the worst case and the question asks for time complexity of O(logK) on average (over the input)". It is important to notice that if you have an algorithm that runs in O(logK) in the worst case, then of course it also runs in O(logK) on average. This is similar to taking a series of values which you know that all of them are no bigger than 5 for example and thus their average also must be no bigger than 5. I also get questions of the form: "In class we only saw the worst case time complexity for data structure X, but I think that if we'll use an argument like we used in another data structure we learned before, we can get a better complexity bound for the average case (although this wasn't taught in class)". For the sake of THIS ASSIGNMENT, when using a certain data structure that was taught in class (without adding further modifications), please use only the complexity bounds that were taught in class and do not try to derive new bounds on known data structures on your own. For example, if we saw a data structure X with operation Y for which we saw only a worst case time complexity, do not try to derive new bounds on its average time complexity. It is not needed in order to solve this assignment, and it might only confuse you and cause you to waste time. I hope this will clarify certain aspects of this hw. Dan. |

Slide versions of lectures available online
As some students pointed out, it is harder to remember/understand what was taught in class from the animation-free pdf versions of lectures. We have therefore uploaded slide versions of lectures. Enjoy. Note that these versions are significantly larger than the original files, so we wouldn't recommend printing them. Regards, Course Staff |

Clarification regarding the "Wet Test" contest
Following numerous amounts of mails sent, questions asked and attempts to ambush us throughout Taub (don't even try, we have Unagi), we would like to clarify the purpose of the "Wet Test" section. The tests you will write will NOT be used in order to grade your assignments, or your friends' assignments. Your code will be tested according to test files we write. This is a right reserved for us, and we do not give it away so easily. But nice try. The purpose of the "Wet Test" bonus section is to motivate you into writing better test files, which leads to better code, better grades, and thus better life. Instead of manually going over the test files you write (lol...), we will run the code you submit with all of these tests as input, to see which are the best test files. Again, this is only a bonus section intended to improve your programming skills. Even though this course is not a programming course, it is still important for us that you will acquire correct programming convensions (in order to prevent mistakes such as this: http://thedailywtf.com/Articles/What_Is_Truth_0x3f_.aspx ). This is why we will hold a tips session tomorrow (Wednesday). In this session, we will go over techniques which will make your next 3 weeks much easier. Good design and correct programming WILL save you time, and part of correct programming is testing your code as thoroughly as possible. Honestly, we don't know how you thought we would turn you one against each other. Contrary to popular belief, the course staff is not out to get you (yet... :P) <img src="http://www.phdcomics.com/comics/archive/phd102910s.gif"> See FAQ for more details. Regards, Course staff. |
