Reception Hours Before the Moed B

Dear students, We will be holding special TA reception hours on the coming Sunday and Monday before the exam, as we have done before the Moed A. If you have any questions, feel free to come to any of these. The reception hours will take place in the TA's offices (written in parentheses after each TA's name). Please note that if some TA's reception hour becomes too crowded, it will be moved to seminar room 701. Therefore, should you come to a reception hour and not find the TA in his/her office, please go on to room 701. Hi all, A few questions have been raised concerning the upcoming Moed B exam. For your convenience, here are some points to note about this exam: 1. The exam will take place on Tuesday, 20.9.05, at 13:00. 2. The material for the Moed B is the same as that of the Moed A. This means no files, enums or structs. 3. The exam will be structured in a similar way to the Moed A. One of the questions will be based on the homework. 4. We will be giving some TA reception hours on the Sunday and Monday before the exam. Reminder: Exam Appeal Deadline

Dear students, I would like to remind you that the appeal deadline for the moed A exam is in three days - this Sunday, 7.8.05. I highly recommend (for this as well as any other course) that you have a look at your exams and make sure there have not been any mistakes in your grade; I remind you, however, that you should only submit an appeal if you are quite positive that a mistake has actually been made (and that we did not miss any other errors of yours in our checking!), as your exams may be subject to rechecking. To submit an appeal, simply drop a copy of your exam, along with the written appeal, in the course box or in my mailbox on floor 5. Appeals will not be considered if submitted after this date. Dear students, A solution to exercise 7 has been published, and can be found on the course website in the 'Assignments' section. Note for the exam: q.1 in ex7 was not trivial, and you do not need to know it all for the exam; the only thing that you should go over in this question is the telescopic expansion in part (d), because it is a bit more complex than what we have seen in class. Cheating In Exercises

Dear students, I am sorry to announce that we have discovered cases of homework cheating in this course; these cases were handled directly by the lecturer in charge, and have brought to the disqualification of several homework submissions. I remind you that copying your homework is not acceptable in this course! If you experience difficulties with any exercise, you always have the option of not submitting it. Please note that from now on, the policy in cases of cheating will be complete loss of the student's 10 points for homework in the course, as well as likely passing on the case to Va'adat Mishma'at. Homework - Please Note

Dear students, 1. There will be 7 exercises in total this semester. You must therefore submit at least 5 exercises with a grade of 6 or more in order to participate in the final exam. 2. You are not required to submit more than 5 exercises in this course, but this is *highly* recommended. Remember that your final homework grade will be the average of your 5 best grades, so the more exercises you submit, the higher a grade you will get. 3. In exercise 5, due to the 2-point bonus question, the maximal grade is 12 instead of 10; this can help you raise your average hw grade if you receive lower scores on other exercises. However, I would like to clearify that your final grade is composed of 10 points for homework and 90 points for the final exam; even with the bonus, the maximum of 10 points remains, i.e. if the average of your 5 best exercises exceedes 10, it will be considered as 10 points for your final grade. Examples: If your 5 best exercises received 10,8,6,12,9, then your average is 9 and you will recieve 9/10 points for hw in your final grade. If your 5 best exercises received 10,9,10,12,10, then your average is 10.2 and you will receive 10/10 points for hw in your final grade. Take care, and may the schwartz be with you, Ron :) |

Exercise 2 Grades

Dear students, Due to some overstrict checking of the recent exercise 2, we have decided to add 1 point to all grades in this exercise (maximum of 10 points remains). In addition, the following incidents have been identified to be erronously penalized: (1) Summing the return values of scanf() and checking only the result (2) Providing an input example without optional features (such as spaces) (3) Using integers instead of character constants in the code (97 instead of 'a') (4) Including redundant source code from the template file in your code (5) Submitting without a partner For all the above incidents, a (-1) reduction has been mistakably applied, and you may obtain these points back. To get these points, or if you wish to otherwise appeal on your grade, please do so in the coming two weeks; either come to my office during my normal office hours, or put the exercise (with a short explanation note) in my mailbox on floor 5. Note, however, that we cannot accept appeals for points reduced due to non-compliance with specific directions appearing on the exercise. Sorry for any inconvenience, and good luck, Ron :) |

Important Announcements

Dear students, Some important points for you to note: 1. Exercise 4 has been published. Submission deadline is 23.5.2005 at 12:00. 2. We have found some errors in chapter 7 of the tutorial slides, in the section discussing global variables. The updated version of the slides has been uploaded to the website, please make sure you have the latest version. 3. Exercise submission: First, I would like to point out that there are a few students who still do not have partners. To find a partner, you may use the "find a partner" link on the website, or contact me if you have difficulties. Second, a small number of students have not followed the electronic submission guidelines carefully in ex1 and ex2 (appearing on the course website under Syllabus->General Info); this complicates significantly the automated verification process, as these cases must be dealt with manually. Please do your best to avoid the following errors: submitting a compressed file which is not in .ZIP format (such as .RAR, .ACE etc.), submitting code files with an extension which is not .C (such as .CPP or .TXT), and using Hebrew names for files or directories. Beginning with ex3, points may be reduced for these errors. 4. I hope you have all noticed the recent message concerning the substitute lecture. In short, due to the memorial day ceremony, all lectures this Thursday at 12:30-14:30 are cancelled, therefore a substitute lecture has been scheduled for this Wednesday, at the same time & place. 5. Guy's recitation group: Guy has permanently moved his reception hour 30 minutes earlier. The udpated time appears on the website. Cancellation of Lecture + Complementary Lecture

Hi all, Due to Yom Hashoaa Vehagvura memorial ceremony, the lecture on Thursday is cancelled (according to the obligatory Technion calendar). Instead of the regular lecture, there will be a complementary lecture THIS WEDENSDAY 4/5 on the same hours (12:30-14:30) and in the same room (Ulman 309). Note that there is no other reasonable option for this complementary lecture due to the basketball game on Sunday and the events (memorial ceremony and Independence Day) next week. Students who cannot attend the complementary lecture can find the lecture slides on the course website (Lecture 8, under Material->Lecture Slides) and can contact Roie for any misunderstood issues. Dear students, 1. First I would like to apologise to anyone who tried to find me during my reception hour yesterday. Due to some last-moment medical issues, I had no possibility of coming or even sending a notification. Any of you who need my urgent help can find me in my office today until 20:00 (or even later) - so either come see me, or call 829-4319. 2. Exercise 2, question 2: There was a slight mistake in the Hebrew definitions; this has been corrected. You shouldn't have any problem though, since all the numerical examples, as well as the running examples, are ok. 3. Once again, there is *no* midterm in this course. It was a joke people! Hi all, 1. Guy's students are reminded that he will be having an additional tutorial this week on Wednesday, 12:30-14:30, at Taub 9. 2. One time only: Ron's recitation on Tuesday, 5.4.05, is *moved* to the next day, Wednesday 6.4.05, 12:30-14:30 at Taub 9. 3. There have been a few recurring questions about exercise 1. Exercise 1 and more

Dear students, Exercise 1 has been published, it is due 7.4.05 at 12:00 noon (electronic submission ends at this time). Late submission will not be accepted. Note that up to the submission time, you may resubmit your homework as many times as you wish, as long as you *make sure* you always resubmit under the same student ID. Only the latest submission will count. Before submitting, read carefully the submission guidelines on the exercise itself and on the website. For those of you new to programming, we have also published a short "warm up" exercise which is not for submission, but can help you with your first programming steps. You may try solving the questions in it and comparing your solutions to the official ones published on the website. Farm reception hours: For two weeks (the coming week and the one after that) there will be TAs present in the EE computer farm to assist you with your work in Turbo C. You will find the TAs in the farm at the following hours: Eyal -- Monday 16:00-18:00 -- 21.3 and 28.3 Oleg -- Wednesday 16:00-18:00 -- 23.3 and 30.3 Substitute recitations for the Sunday groups: both Oleg and Guy's groups will have an additional recitation on wednesday 12:30-14:30. This recitation will replace the last recitation in the semester (26.6) which is canceled. The substitute recitations are scheduled as follows: Oleg -- Wednesday 23.3 12:30-14:30 -- Taub 9 Guy -- Wednesday 30.3 12:30-14:30 -- Taub 9 Please take note of these dates and do your best to attend. Hi all, Exercise 0 is now published and may be found in the course website, under "assignments". The exercise is not for submission, but it is highly recommend that you solve it.
