Homework 5, Question 1.

Dear students, There is an issue concerning the part (b) of the first question in the WH5 what was recently checked. In this part one is asked whether the given iteration functions \phi converge to some of roots of the funciton f(x). It is known that the roots reside in segments [1,2] and [-2,-1] correspondingly; therefore most of the students (and so am I) saw the necessity to prove convergence from any starting point in these segments, using the Convergence theorem. Hovewer, in practice the question is whether the iterations will converge in principle, i.e. when the starting point is close enough. Therefore, it is sufficient to show |\phi'(alpha)|<1. Due to the fact I misinterpreted the question, some students which solve the question correctly (and concerned with phi'(x) only) received remarks saying another condition is missing (for Convergence theorem to hold); also the grading of the question was reduced by 1 or 2 points for that reason. I apologize for the erroneous checking and will re-check this question for every student whos solution was misinterpreted as described above. Dear Students, As you know there will be 10 homeworks during the semester. Since every semester lasts 14 weeks a new homeworks will be given about every 10 days (1.4 week). So you can plan your time better. Please note also that the last one or two homeworks will be due AFTER the end of the semester. Homework submission rules
|
Dear Students, Following are rules you should follow when submitting your homework. 1) The homeworks must be clearly written. It is highly advised to typeset your homework in a word processor (LyX or any other LaTeX processors are recommended). If you submit a handwirtten work make sure it is very clear and easy to read. Non-readable answers will be rejected. 2) The order of your answers must match the order of questions. That is you should answer the first question than the second one and so on. Hence, if you submit a work with answers 1a, 1b, 1d, 1c. the latter (1c) will be considered missing. 3) When you submit graphs always use "full-decoration-mode", i.e., add titles, legends, and axis labels to your graphs. As a simple self-test consider a person who does not know what the homework is about, he/she must, however, to be able to understand what is depicted in your graph. When you plot several function on a single axis make care that the graphs are distinguishable even when you print them black-and-white: use different line styles in this case. 4) It is very recommended to work in pairs. Discuss with your partner all questions, do not split the work, such that you know only half of the questions. 5) Do not copy from other people and do not let the others to copy your work. Work in pairs. Students who are caught cheating will find themselves in troubles. 6) Use concise (but correct) formulation. As a rule of thumb: if your answer takes more than half a page you are probably in a wrong direction. 7) Homeworks must be submitted on time. Any homework submitted after the deadline will be rejected. The only reason for late submission is miluim service. On our side we have a commitment to check your homeworks withing two weeks from the submission date. |
