Dear Students, The exam is scheduled for Tuesday, September 3rd. You can find the cover page in the course material section. Structure: The format will be similar to the last five semesters, with some changes. Exams from before 2020 are less relevant but can still be useful for preparation. Duration: 3 hours. Materials: This is a closed-book exam; no additional materials are allowed. Calculator: Required. Ruler: Recommended. Exam Content: The exam will cover all material from the 12 lectures, tutorials, and homework assignments. The first page of the exam is now available on the course website. When reviewing exams from previous years, be aware that the content may vary between semesters. Topics not covered this semester: * Clustering (k-means, EM) * Dimensionality reduction (PCA) * Specific smaller topics: LDA, Sauer–Shelah lemma * Evaluation metrics (AUC, ROC, Recall & Precision) Topics emphasized more this semester: * Optimization and convexity * VC dimension and PAC learning * SVM and perceptron * Deep learning You will not be required to write code on this exam. Dear students, A clarification regarding major HW1, Task H. In this task, you need to write a module with the function prepare_data, which processes new_data according to training_data. You can assume that all your conclusions from the exercise hold, and you only use the training data for its statistics. For example, if in the exercise you understood that there are NULLs only in feature "feature_a", and you should fill the null values with the mean, then prepare_data should fill only the null values in "feature_a" using the mean (when the mean is taken from training_data). Also, if you determined in the exercise that you should normalize PCR_x using min-max, then prepare_data should also normalize PCR_x using min-max (when again, the statistics are taken from training_data). The assignment is mandatory and its grade is worth 6% of the final grade. We trust you to solve it *solely* with your partner(s). The assignment concentrates on data exploration and data preparation. All three major assignments will handle the same data, so, the insights you will gain in this assignment will help you throughout the two other assignments. A few remarks: 1. Stay calm. There are many ways to tackle and solve this assignment. You are primarily assessed based on your report, reasoning, and explanations. 2. Don’t get stuck on the first questions, e.g., typing of columns. If you’re not sure, guess and then come back later after you have finished your analysis and become more informed. Dear students, We are excited to begin the course! 1. The Probability and Numerical Algorithms prerequisites will be enforced at the beginning of the semester. 2. Frontal instruction: all lectures and tutorials are currently planned to be only frontal. 3. Recordings: we provided you with the Panopto folders of the lectures and tutorials from 2021 (course material section). We highly advise you to attend physically the classes of the current semester. The recordings should be used as a "Plan B", since they are slightly outdated on several places. The obligating material for the assignments and the exams is the one we will teach during the *current* semester. Moreover, we have recordings of review workshops from last semester also available under course material. Note that the lecture, tutorial and review workshop that focus on generative models are not part of the syllabus this semester. 4. Written correspondence will be held only using the course email at u236756MLatgmail.com 5. Course materials are written in English. Classes will be held in Hebrew. Exams - in Hebrew. If you need an English exam, please contact the course email ASAP. 6. The course is not based on a single book. We do offer some references to prominent literature in the syllabus, and we may refer to relevant chapters as the course progresses. 7. Course grading and assignments: - 74% exam (55+ to pass). - 3 major programming assignments: 18% of final grade (mandatory, submitted in pairs only). These assignments will be slightly shorter than previous semesters. - 4 short assignments (mostly non-programming): 8% of final grade (mandatory, submitted individually). - See the syllabus for full details. 8. Students repeating the course: Can migrate the major assignments' grades from the previous semester, but *must* redo the updated short assignments. 9. We will hold two weekly office hours on Sunday and Thursday via Zoom at 16:30-17:20. The link is provided in the "Course Material" section. 10.
