Following Students' Questions in the Last Lecture/Tutorial | |

1. As I said in the class - it might happen in a two-player zero-sum game that there exists a CE which is not an MNE. E.g., think about a trivial payoff matrix A with all the entries being zero, and a CE that is a generic distribution s over some entries of A. If you are looking for a less degenerate example - you may add a non-zero row and a non-zero column to A that would severely penalize deviations from s. Nevertheless, one can prove that in a two-player zero-sum game, the payoffs to both players in any CE are always equal to the payoffs in any MNE. 2. A matrix representing a Markov chain needs not to be diagonalizable. The only requirements from its entries are non-negativity and that each row (or column - depending on the point of view) sums up to 1. Some Updates | |

1. Updated tutorial 10 slides were uploaded to the course site. In particular, the clarity of Problem 14.2(b) solution was improved. Moreover, a slight correction was made in slide 17. The tutorial recording was uploaded as well. Unfortunately, a sound issue appeared during the tutorial, but the sound in the recording is OK. 2. You should read on your own the solution of Problem 14.2(b) from tutorial 10 slides and the solution of Exercise 13.3 from lecture 9 + recitation 9 slides. 3. Next Monday (June 13) there will be no tutorial. 4. Konstantin will give a reception hour on Thursday, June 9, 11:30-12:30 instead of the planned reception hour on Tuesday, June 14. The reception hour tomorrow will be held as usual; the reception hour on June 14 is cancelled. 5. On Monday, June 20, Konstantin will give both the lecture and the tutorial. *The usual Zoom tutorial link will apply both for the lecture and the tutorial on June 20*. |

A Clarification on Bayesian Persuasion | |
| The representation of a signaling scheme as an unconditional distribution over posteriors just tells which posterior is induced with which unconditional probability, without dividing to cases according to the true state of nature. Given a Bayes-plausible distribution over posteriors, one can uniquely extract for any state of nature which posterior to induce with which probability in this state using Bayes' law. Therefore, identifying a signaling scheme with the corresponding unconditional (on the state of nature) distribution over posteriors does not cause data loss. This remark was added to slide 13 from tutorial 7. |

Very Important Updates | |

Dear Students, 1. As the pace in the tutorial today was quite fast, and many students didn't come to the tutorial - I will hold a special Bayesian persuasion workshop on Wednesday 18.5, 20:00 (Zoom only - with a special Zoom link). In this workshop, I will answer all the questions you have, repeat parts of the tutorial that you will ask me to, and if you are interested - I will go over the proof sketches of the second direction of the splitting lemma and of all the parts of the main theorem. The workshop will last up to one hour, until all the questions are answered. It is extremely recommended to come to this workshop or to the reception hour tomorrow if you didn't come to the tutorial today or if you have some questions - the tutorial today was arguably the hardest in the whole semester. 2. The reception hour tomorrow will be held as usual, but for the next two weeks - it will be shifted to Monday 8:00-9:00. That is, there will be reception hours on Monday 23.5 8:00-9:00 and Monday 30.5 8:00-9:00 (Zoom only - the usual link applies). The reception hours on Tuesdays 24.5 and 31.5 are cancelled. 3. Coordination of Expectations - The Tutorials | |

Dear Students, I'm writing you following the preliminary results of the internal survey (in which you still can participate by Sunday). As I said in the first tutorial - our incentives are aligned, and it is important that our expectations are coordinated. To make sure the remaining tutorials will be as good as possible, I would like to raise several points. 1. I'm really grateful for your comments and I'll do my best to take them into account. 2. As in many courses in the CS faculty, the tutorials are not just intended to solve problems on the topic of the last lecture, but they sometimes also provide some new material. In particular, tutorials 1-2 covered - up to some changes and in a more formal way - the material from Chapter 1 in the course textbook (and an exercise about it), which was not presented in the lectures. As for the Bayesian persuasion tutorials - they could as well be lectures. However, after we finish Bayesian persuasion, most of the tutorials will be about solving exercises/problems related to the lectures. 3. None of the definitions presented in the tutorials contradict the definitions from the course textbook - the difference is only in the formality level. I increased the formality level after hearing some feedback from students last year. In parallel, I always discuss the intuition behind the definitions. 4. When solving such complicated problems as 4.2, I have no choice but to skip some straightforward proof details and to concentrate more on the intuition - even 2 tutorials aren't enough to present all the details of all the subsections in a moderate pace and to lead a discussion. 5. In my opinion, the discussion and the high-level remarks providing a connection to broader topics are extremely important, especially in an advanced course. 6. If you don't understand something, or I'm talking too fast, or you just want me to repeat some explanation - please feel totally free to tell me immediately (you don't even have to wait until I ask if there are any questions). It happened a lot during the last tutorial, and I'm extremely happy about that. Moreover, it is perfectly fine to tell me that you just want to stop the tutorial for a minute to make sure you understand everything, or to finish writing. 7. You should try to keep a high level of concentration - this is an advanced course, the material is not easy and we only have one tutorial a week. However, as I wrote in the previous point - you are more than welcome to interrupt me if you don't understand something. On the contrary, I kindly ask you not to talk with other students during the tutorials, for 3 reasons: - If you don't understand something, it is very important for me to know it. - Both you and the student you are talking to lose their concentration. - It disturbs me when students are talking. I will welcome any further comments. In particular, if you have some constructive suggestions of how to improve some issues related to the points I mentioned above - you are more than welcome to submit an answer to our internal survey (even if you've already submitted), or to send me an e-mail. Clarifications + A Survey | |

1. The slides for recitation 5 were updated: the material postponed to recitation 6 was removed; a small typo in slide 12 was corrected; slides 17-18 were rewritten to improve clarity. 2. Notwithstanding this part of the message is long, fully understanding it is a good indication that you understood the material of the last recitation. When presenting slide 17, I didn't notice that I jumped a step forward. In fact, the last bullet in slide 17 (both in the old and the new version of the slides) still considers the signaling scheme as a collection of *conditional* distributions (on the possible values of the state), but over the posteriors (rather than over the signal realizations). Under this interpretation, the signaling scheme is a *deterministic* function from the set of states to the set of distributions over posteriors - i.e., to the set of distributions over distributions over the states. The next step is to compute the *unconditional on the state* distribution that the signaling scheme induces over posteriors (using the law of total probability - as we saw in slide 11). Under this interpretation, the signaling scheme specifies a *single* distribution over posteriors (which is now explained more clearly in slide 18). An easy exercise - think whether each distribution over distributions over the states is the unconditional distribution over posteriors induced by some signaling scheme. 3. We uploaded a short anonymous internal survey about the course to the top of the "course material" section of the website. Participation is not mandatory, but we would be grateful if you participate until Sunday 1.5. It would help us to improve the course. |

The recording of tutorial 3 is published. Please note that this is not the recording of the live tutorial, but an asynchronous recording I made after the original tutorial. While making the asynchronous recording, I tried to keep in mind the points that raised questions during the live tutorial. Unfortunately, starting from 11:41 in the asynchronous recording I made, the sound quality was extremely low. Therefore - I had to re-record the sound starting from that point, making a "simultaneous interpretation" of myself. It makes the audio-video combination look a bit weird, but what I say is consistent with the video. If you came to the class and stayed until I finished Problem 4.2(e) after the lesson end - you do not have to watch the recording. בעת המעבר על שקף 39, הסברנו בקצרה מדוע, אף על פי שהגיוני היה שבהגדרת MNE נתייחס לכל הסטיות האפשריות של שחקן מסוים לאסטרטגיות מעורבות כלשהן - מסתכלים אך ורק על סטיות לאסטרטגיות *טהורות*. ההסבר הוא שלכל שחקן, בהינתן האסטרטגיות המעורבות של שאר השחקנים, תמיד יש תשובה טובה ביותר שהיא אסטרטגיה טהורה. כלומר - האפשרות לסטות לאסטרטגיות שאינן טהורות לא עוזרת לשחקן לשפר את תוחלת התשלום שלו. ההוכחה מבוססת על רעיון פשוט: בהיקבע האסטרטגיות המעורבות של כל השחקנים חוץ מאחד, תוחלת התשלום לשחקן זה הינה פונקציה לינארית במשתנים המייצגים את האסטרטגיה המעורבת שלו, ופונקציה לינארית מקבלת מקסימום בנקודת קצה של תחום ההגדרה (כלומר - נקודה שלא מהווה נקודה פנימית באף קטע המוכל כולו בתחום ההגדרה). במקרה שלנו, תחום ההגדרה הוא אוסף כל ההתפלגויות מעל k איברים (כאשר k הוא מספר האסטרטגיות הטהורות של אותו שחקן), כלומר אוסף כל הווקטורים באורך k שרכיביהם אי-שליליים ומסתכמים ל-1. נקודות הקצה של קבוצה זו הן בדיוק איברי הבסיס הסטנדרטי, המייצגים את האסטרטגיות הטהורות של השחקן. |

1. לאתר הועלתה הקלטה אסינכרונית של חזרה על המושג החשוב מאוד "תועלת חברתית" ופתרון תרגיל 2.8 (החל משקף 56 במצגת לתרגולים 1-2 באתר). ההקלטה מופיעה באתר תחת השם "תרגול 2.5". מומלץ לצפות בהקלטה. 2. בוצעו שינויים קלים למצגת לתרגולים 1-2, כולל תיקונים בשקפים 61-62. 3. בגלל תקלה טכנית שנוגעת לא רק לקורס שלנו, כרגע לא ניתן להעלות לאתר את ההקלטות מהרצאה ותרגול 2. למרבה הצער, מתברר שגם הקישור הזמני שהועלה לאתר מוקדם יותר היום אינו זמין לצפיה. 4. כפי שנאמר בתרגול 1 - לא כל התרגולים יועברו עם מצגת (תרגולים שהם יותר מתמטיים-טכניים או שפותרים בהם שאלות שעשויות להופיע בתרגיל בית בסמסטר אחר לא יועברו עם מצגות). בפרט, תרגול 3 יועבר ללא מצגת. נתראה בשבוע הבא! |
