Exam A Link - Follow here
Dear Students, For those who intend to attend today's exam, please follow the link we published yesterday. We got approval from the faculty dean that the exam will be conducted in a light version than the official guideline of the online exam. Our exam is more like homework, we will publish the question through the assignment and you will submit in the same way after you scan/photo your solution. The differences between this light version exam and the homework are that you need to do it on your own, you need to do it via connected to the Zoom and show your face, you need to finish it in time, etc. The teaching staff will be there for answering the questions. All the best and good luck, The course staffs |

Online Exam | |
Dear students, following the new regulations, we cannot do an exam at the Technion. Instead the exam will be held online, via zoom. It will be on the same day and time than originally scheduled. The exam will follow a lighter version of the official Technion policy. We will submit the exam on the gr site just like a homework, and you will have to submit it there as well. Each student must be connected to zoom during the exam. The teaching staff will be connected as well and you can directly ask them a question there. Essentially, the surveillance policy is based on trust, similarly to the homeworks. It is essential for us to respect your privacy. We will minimise intrusive measures as much as possible (e.g.: you do not have to install some software to let us block you access from your computer etc.) You will be given extra time after the end of the exam to take pictures/scan your exams and submit it to the course website. You should be careful to have enough paper to write on and pens/ink, as we won't be able to provide you any. You cannot answer via a computer/tablet and must write your solutions by hand with a clear handwritting. Note that you may not use your computer/phone except for talking to the teaching staff on zoom and checking the time. Everyone should be ready and connected to zoom 15 min before the exam, in order to follow the presentation on how things will happen and to make sure that everything is ok. Those who need time extensions as per Technion regulation will naturally be granted it (submission on the gr site will be open to take into account these possibilities). Please save 4+ hours for the exam. The current official duration is 3h. Due to the teaching conditions, we know your names but do not know what you look like. Therefore, please have with you some identification (e.g. id card with a recent photo) for us to be sure that you are the one supposed to pass your exam. Please contact us if you have any specific question. Best regards, The course staff |

Open Material in the Exam
Dear all, One A4 piece of paper with handwritten notes is allowed to bring with you to the exam. That means both sides of an A4 piece of paper. You can write anything you want on it. You cannot print on it though. We recommend that you design such a sheet by finding the core material (in the slides, tutorials, and homework) and putting the formulae that are essential and that allow you to find everything else very quickly. You should also know how to get such formulae on your own in case you are faced with a similar yet different problem that requires you to adapt the proof. Note that such a paper is not necessary to complete the exams. Best regards, The course staffs |

HW4 - Extension for all + time management
Dear students, we have decided to extend the deadline for the submission of HW4 for everyone to be 27/06 23:59. No further extension will be accepted due to the proximity with the exam. You are currently able to solve the first 3 exercises. You can already write and test most of the core code of the matlab exercise. Exercise 4 and the matlab exercises require knowledge on the Wiener filter, which will be covered in class and in the tutorial on the 21/06 and 24/06. Note the proximity between the teaching of this material and the deadline, so please prepare yourself before-hand and we recommend to finish the other exercises as soon as possible. Autocorrelation VS Covariance and conjugate transpose
Dear Students, The autocorrelation matrix is constructed directly by the data and it is not necessarily centered. In the context of this course, the conventional PCA is operating on zero-centered data. That is being said, if the data has zero mean, then it's the same essence applying the eigendecomposition on the covariance matrix and the autocorrelation matrix. However, if the data is not centered (the mean is not a zero vector), then the PCA with respect to a signal relies on the eigendecomposition of its covariance matrix. The slides of Tutorial 9 are updated accordingly, especially in the last one. Another update about conjugate transpose: in Matlab, ' or ctranspose support conjugate transpose operator in Python, numpy.transpose does not support it. You should use numpy.matrix.H Best regards, The course staffs |

HW3 - Long computations and DFT
Dear students, some of you have contacted us for long computation times in the matlab part. If your code takes more than a couple of seconds to run then you have an issue. You may wish to consider the following items: 1) Do I need to do for loops? Maybe I can use the power of vectorized coding (wich is thousands of times faster in Matlab or Python) using matrix or point-wise matrix multiplications. 2) Am I doing many useless or redundant calculations? There is no use to compute the same thing over and over again. If it is always the same, then I should just compute it once. 3) Am I using heavy and slow algorithms that always work but do not consider essential properties of my matrices that I can exploit to do the same thing much faster? 4) Is my code long and complicated? This is a simple homework and everything can be done using just a few lines of simple code. Most of the tasks can be achieved using one or two lines of basic code. 5) Am I overusing functions in useless cases? Matlab functions copy the entire data, not the pointer to the data. We also realise that some of you do not have a high enough resolution display to see the image completely without some downsampling, thus leading to not being able to see those interfered columns. You should display the entire image and then display zooms of the image on interesting regions to show us what is happening. Best regards, The course staff |

Clarification of Tutorial 6
Dear Students, Following today's discussions, clarifications and updates have been made in the slides to avoid confusion in the definition and usage of Fourier coefficients. The message from this is to be careful at what exactly we are talking about: what basis to the coefficients represent, what is the context of the problem (continuous function basis, finite-dimensional vector basis), etc. Notice that from slide 21, we are talking about representing a discrete signal vector using the DFT matrix, that is, the DFT-domain representation. By taking the uniform sampling of the function, the new representation decomposed by the DFT matrix is defined by \phi^F = DFT*\phi. What I mentioned in today's tutorial is that, if you are getting the Fourier coefficient as in the context of slide 18, then the function needs to be normalized. However, the concept started from slide 21 focuses on the DFT-domain representation. The relation of this new representation and the definition of \tilde{\phi}^F is added in the slide 22. Sorry for the confusion, we will clarify it again in the next tutorial. Best regards, The course staffs |

Dear Students, Welcome to the "Signal, Image, and Data Processing" course (236200). We hope you all stay healthy and ready for the semester. We’ve made the preparation to give the course online at this special time. For now, there will be no frontal teaching and you will have remote learning through Zoom (see below the detailed guideline of Zoom). Regarding the lecture, we decided to have a flipped classroom by watching the lecture videos from last semester at home and having the discussion at lecture time by Zoom. That is, you will learn the material at home first and you can ask questions at the lecture time online. The first lecture discussion will be held on next Sunday at 11:30-14:30. In contrast to the lecture, the tutorial will be given online through Zoom. Namely, you will learn the tutorial material at the tutorial time. The first tutorial will be delivered on next Tuesday at 8:30-10:30. As for Zoom, please install Zoom and sign in with your @campus email. We will announce the meeting link on the course website before the lecture/tutorial, so please check it before getting to the correct Zoom meeting. The lecture slides, lecture notes, lecture video and tutorial slides will be updated to the course website. The homework assignments will be published on it as well, so be sure to check the course website regularly (an announcement will be published with every homework assignment). Feel free to contact us, our contact details are available on the course website. We hope you'll have a healthy, enjoyable and interesting semester. See you all online next week. Good luck!
