Exam B grades are now published. The exams will be returned to Mazcirut tomorrow. The final grades were calculated using the following formula: ExamB_Factor = ExamB+5 (ExamB_Factor<50)?ExamB_Factor:round(0.6*ExamB_Factor+0.07*HW1+0.13*HW2+0.13*HW3+0.07*HW4) Appeals on the exam can be submitted on a standard appeals form to Leonid's mail box on the 5th floor of Taub. The last day for appeals is 10/05/2009. A few words about an appeal: 1. Please check your exam very well before appealing. Pay attention that we will recheck the whole exam. It may cause a decrease in final grade as well. 2. If you want to ask me (Leonid) any question before you appeal you can send to me the question with the exam attached. 3. Please don't forget to use official sheet. Otherwise we will not be able to change your grade. 4. Also please attach to the appeal the whole exam (and not only the question you want to appeal on). Reception hours before Moed B. | |

As you have probably noticed Technion will be closed for a week and a half before moed B. So, we can not give any reception hour before moed B. I (Leonid) will give a reception hour on Monday (06.04) at 12:30 at ISL lab. However, based on my experience it is to early and most of you have not started preparing to the exam yet. Therefore, we suggest that you use the course email (ucs234120atcs.technion.ac.il) to ask questions (regarding the material or the exam questions). HW4 grades are published now (see the course website, HW assignments section). The dry part will been returned today. We will upload soon the description of the tests. There also a solution to dry questions available. We will hold special appealing session next week. You can appeal both on dry and wet parts. The purpose of the wet part appealing is to fix small bugs in your implementation that caused failures of many automatic tests. We will not accept changes that fix 1-2 tests (meaning if your changes fix1 or 2 tests your grade will remain unchanged). The exact date and location of the appeal session will be announced soon. ANy group that is willing to participate has to dend me an email till Sat. evening. |

Exams from previous semesters and some useful information | |

First of all, the exam will be with open material. I have uploaded achieve with 18 solved exams from previous semesters (see Material section). There are 2 videos (http://video.technion.ac.il/Courses/OPSYS_Q.html) where I solve some questions from the exams. On the course site you can find the power point presentations that are used in the videos. On Wednesday at 12:30 I will hold special session, where I will solve the questions from the exams (the questions that do not appear in the videos). The exact location of the session will be announced later. If you want some question from the exam to be solved during the session, please send it to me. In addition we will hold special reception hours before the exam. The exact time and location will be announced later. The last thing, if you have a question that you want to ask you can also do it using the email. Please DO NOT use our personal emails. You should use the course email instead (ucs234120atcs.technion.ac.il). If you are writing in Hebrew please write your email in Word and attach the file to your email. If you are asking something regarding any question from an exam from previous years please attach the whole question to your email. |

In the assignments section you can find the detailed grades for all tests and the description of the tests themselves. There also a solution to dry questions. For Hw3 I added a code that explains the idea of implementation of the most difficult part of the assignment. Pay attention that the maximum grade of hw2 and hw3 was more then 100 points. So, if you scored more then 100 your final grade will be 100. We will hold special appealing session next week. You can appeal both on dry and wet parts. Working at the PC farm | |

If you are working at the PC farm please pay attention to the following issues: 1. Work only on the room 18. We have checked the Linux images in this room they are all clean and VMWare stations works fine (if there is any problem let ne know). 2. Do not use the Linux image in the C:/temp folder that was left by other groups. These images are modified by other students and may contain unnecessary files and bugs. Replace it each time with the clean image from c:\vm\linux-234120 (you can't run the image from c:\vm\linux-234120 without copying it first). 3. The PCs in other rooms have VMWare Player installed. The images there do not fit the player and you will not have the Shared Folders - you can use disc on key. Currently the system are checking the possibility to fix this problem. |

Because of the “midterm period” we decided to postpone the deadline of hw2 to Sunday 04.01.2009 12:30 (noon). However, hw3 will be published on Thursday 01.01 as scheduled and the deadline will be 22.01 (3 weeks). Pay attention that we will not give a postponement for hw3, simply because we don’t have any spare time in this semester. Also, hw3 usually is the longest one in the semester. Therefore, we strongly recommend you to finish hw2 in time and start working on hw3 right after it is published. |

What are asmlinkage and __init? | |
|
1. The asmlinkage tag is one other thing that we should observe about this simple function. This is a #define for some gcc magic that tells the compiler that the function should not expect to find any of its arguments in registers (a common optimization), but only on the CPU's stack. Recall our earlier assertion that system_call consumes its first argument, the system call number, and allows up to four more arguments that are passed along to the real system call. system_call achieves this feat simply by leaving its other arguments (which were passed to it in registers) on the stack. All system calls are marked with the asmlinkage tag, so they all look to the stack for arguments. Of course, in sys_ni_syscall's case, this doesn't make any difference, because sys_ni_syscall doesn't take any arguments, but it's an issue for most other system calls. And, because you'll be seeing asmlinkage in front of many other functions, I thought you should know what it was about. 2. __init tells GCC to put the function in a special section. These functions are only used during booting, and are removed from memory after boot. |

The new course number is 234123 | |
| The upgrade to 4.5 points for OS was finally approved and the course number has been changed to 234123. So, all students were transferred to 234123. Pay attention that you no longer should be registered to 234120 but to 234123. There is no change in the course schedule or hw plans. |

Preliminary Assignment has been published | |

A preliminary assignment has been published in the homework section. Although this assignment is not for submission, you are recommended to finish it until 19.11. The assignment will prepare you for working with VMware, and it includes important details that you will need for performing the next assignments in the course. The "VMware project" (including Linux OS) CD can be found in the CS library (s.n.2265711). The project that is on CD is for VMware station (which is not free software). If you don't have VMware station, you can download the VMware player 2. from WMware Inc website () If you use the player you have to make small modifications to the project. In order do add shared folders in VMware player 2.0 add the following text to Linux-234120.vmx: ------- sharedFolder.maxNum = "1" sharedFolder0.present = "TRUE" sharedFolder0.enabled = "TRUE" sharedFolder0.readAccess = "TRUE" sharedFolder0.writeAccess = "TRUE" sharedFolder0.hostPath = "PATH ON THE HOST, E.G. C:\Temp" sharedFolder0.guestName = "NameOfFolderAsSeenByTheGuest" sharedFolder0.expiration = "never" isolation.tools.hgfs.disable = "FALSE" ------- More details about VMware can be found in the FAQ section in the website. Assignments in the course should be submitted in groups of 3, and we encourage you to form the groups now, and not wait for the first (real) assignment. You can use the "Find a partner" section in the website for this cause. Please pay attention that when you are installing VMware on the PC that is connected to the network from dormitories you should read carefully (VERY carefully) how to install it and to make all the needed configuration changes for the networking (see the last page of the assignment). If you don't do it the right way you PC will act as if it is DHCP server. That will prevent you and other students to connect to the network. |

Some important announcements | |

Dear Students, Before the beginning of the semester we have several important announcements. 1. Information regarding lectures and tutorials hours and locations is now available on the 'Staff' section in the course website. Specifically please pay attention that Leonid's tutorial on Tuesday will be at Taub 7 and not at Taub 8 as it appears on the UG site. 2. The tutorial on Raja's Monday during the first week (10.11.2008) will not take place because of Rabin memorial ceremony. The complementary tutorial will be given on 12.11 at 12:30 at Taub 7 (see 'Events' section). 3. During the second week each TA will hold special reception hours in order to provide a demonstration of working with Linux OS. You can see the days and hours of such reception hours in the 'Events' section on website. 4. In the 'Syllabus' section there is a document describing hw regulations (and some extra tips). Please go over it. You can find the cover page that has to be used for the Hws in the 'Assignments' section. Good Luck! |
