Exam C grades are now published and the exams have been returned to Mazcirut. The final grades were calculated using the following formula (equal to the one used for moed A this semester): (ExamC<50)?ExamC:round(0.6*ExamC+0.07*HW1+0.13*HW2+0.13*HW3+0.07*HW4) You can find the solution of the moed A in the material section of the course website of the winter semester. Appeals on the exam can be submitted on a standard appeals form to Leonid's mail box on the 5th floor of Taub. The last day for appeals is 10/03/2009. A few words about an appeal: 1. Please check your exam very well before appealing. Pay attention that we will recheck the whole exam. It may cause a decrease in final grade as well. 2. If you want to ask me (Leonid) any question before you appeal you can send to me the question with the exam attached. 3. Please don't forget to use official sheet. Otherwise we will not be able to change your grade. 4. Also please attach to the appeal the whole exam (and not only the question you want to appeal on). We will not check the appeal otherwise. 5. In some questions we gave partial grade even for a wrong answer. We will not accept any appeal on the amount points that were reduced in such cases. |

We have replaced the web client for VMWare. The previous one was compiled on a different version of Linux and caused segmentation fault on some platforms. The updated one was compiled on the Linux version as you use. We have also updated the FAQ. |

The exams from the previous semesters are available on the course website. Before the exam I will hold a special session where I will solve any question you want from the exams. Initially I planned to give it on Wed. 20.08, but because of the exam in “Automata and Formal Languages” (236353) I was asked to move it to Thursday, 21.08. If there is some problem with the new date, that is relevant to a group of students, let me know by email. |

| Next Tuesday Leonid will give a tutorial on modules in Linux. This tutorial is not for the exams (neither for moed A nor for moed B). However, we recommend everybody to come to this tutorial as this material is very important. We have received many emails from students that were asked questions about modules on their job interviews. If there will be time left I will show you the implementation of a simple module. |

We have uploaded a file with sample messages between client and server. In addition this file contains an implementation of the client just like the one that you need to write. We give it in order to allow you testing your server with additional client. As it is written in the assignment your client/server should be undependable and will be checked using our own client/server implementations. |

An important note about the wrapper functions | |
|
After closer look on some student’s code we have found an additional common problem. Many of you have performed (partial) parameter checking in the wrapper functions. This is completely wrong. The system call user doesn’t have to use your wrapper. Moreover, wrapper shouldn’t implement any logic of the system call. It just plays a role of a bridge between the user mode and the kernel mode. As explained in tutorial 2, the actual parameters’ checking is performed by the actual system call (in your case sys_fork_n). Kernel functions should assume absolutely nothing about the user mode functions. That why the parameters have to be checked inside the kernel only. We have rerun the tests of the students that made such a mistake. The updated grades are in the HW1_grades.xls file now. |

A file with explanation about common mistakes in this hw can also be found in the Material section. As this hw doesn't contain a wet part we will not set any special appeal hour. This folder contains summaries and explanations to the material from the tutorials. Note that these summaries are NOT an official material and are not compulsory to go over. It is for your convenience and help only. In particular, the summaries do not contain all the material, but only some chosen points. This material does NOT substitute the official tutorial slides in the Recitations section. The only compulsory and obligatory material as defined by the syllabus is the Lectures and official Recitations slides. Note: This lecture is not part of 234120 OS course. In several CS courses - mainly Matam, Data Structures and Operating Systems, students face the often-unfamiliar Linux environment, and use it to hand in course exercises. Experienced users have often seen them have difficulty with these topics, which the lecture will cover: * Compiling multi-source-file programs properly - first into object (.o) files, then linking * Creating and using Makefiles Furthermore, two very good reasons for students to enjoy (or suffer less, anyway) programming in Linux will be presented: * The Data Display Debugger (DDD), a graphical debugger to make pointer-based data structures almost too easy... * Valgrind, a tool which detects when you do dumb stuff with memory Additional tips and tricks will be given, which should be very useful for Matam students for the C/C++ exercises (especially the second C exercise). Recommended prior knowledge: * Basic C programming (for example, Intro to CS) * Basic Unix/Linux shell usage (for example, TCSH exercise from Matam) Slide handouts are available here: http://lutzky.net/files/linux_cs_primer.pdf If you intend to write, please bring these handouts and write on them! (The margins are HUGE!) This way we will save time copying the examples. Time & Place: Monday July 7th, 18:30, at Taub 6. During this semester I am doing summaries for each of the tutorials. In these summaries you can see the main topics that were covered in the corresponding tutorial, and some short explanations. The purpose of these files is to let you to refresh the material that you have learned during the previous tutorials. I want to emphasize that not all the material from the tutorial appears in the summaries and not all the explanations. If you have missed a tutorial or preparing for the exam or for the hw solving you should read the tutorial slides. The material that is not present in the summaries but appears in the tutorial slides is a part of course material and may appear as a question on the exam or hw. In case of any inconsistency between the summary and the tutorial slides the way the material is presented in the tutorial slides is the correct way. Please pay attention that I am doing these files for each tutorial (for tutorial n I am preparing a summary of tutorial n-1 so I will be able to go over it in the class). Therefore I cannot publish the future summaries, as I simply don’t have them yet. I have uploaded summaries for first 3 tutorials (see the material section of the course). Next week we will hold a lecture on Tuesday, 10/06 (which is Be Matkonet of Sunday), at 16:30 (faculty completion hours), in Taub 2. This lecture is instead of a lecture on Monday the week after that, 16/06, which will be canceled. The lecture on the week after that, Monday 23/06, will be as regular. |

A preliminary assignment has been published in the homework section. Although this assignment is not for submission, you are recommended to finish it until 31.05. The assignment will prepare you for working with VMWare, and it includes important details that you will need for performing the next assignments in the course. Assignments in the course should be submitted in groups of 3, and we encourage you to form the groups now, and not wait for the first (real) assignment. Dear student, In case you are registered to this course either without the required Kdamim/Tzmudim, or without fulfilling other particular track (Maslul) conditions (as published in the UG website), your registration will be automatically canceled. Please note that Kedem of a Kedem or Kedem of a Tzamud is also regarded as a required Kedem. Exceptions to this rule are: 1. Students who passed Moed A in a Kedem course in the previous semester: Their registration will not be cancelled if they are registered to the kedem again. 2. Students with an average grade of over 90: apply with Student Request 3. Students in the Technion Excellence Program. 4. Students (not in the courses: combi+algo+Atam+Matam+Mivne) who participated in any final exam of the Kedem in the previous semester. VMWare installation in the dorms - VERY IMPORTANT | |

Please pay attention that when you are installing VMWare on the PC that is connected to the network from dormitories you should read carefully (VERY carefully) how to install it and to make all the needed configuration changes for the networking. The problem is that if you don't do it right way you PC will act as if it is DHCP server. That will prevent other students do connect to the network. |

During the course you will work with VMWare. The VMWAre CD can be found in the CS library. If the librarian doesn't know what CDs you're talking about, ask him/her about s.n.2265711.
