Clarifications on HW5 | |
Hi all A few clarifications regarding HW5: 1. Regarding the choice of a color space for active contours, it should still be a complete color space -RGB,HSV,YCbCr, Lab, etc - i.e, not a single projection. Although specifically the pepper does not require more than one direction for segmentation, the Chan-vese / GAC / combined model is to use a color/vector formulation, and be quite general (at least on 'easy' segmentation images). If you wish, after doing the "either" part (showing GAC and CV), you can in the "both" part (note the "and") use a different function of the image for the active contour to work on. 2. Display in the hand-in the result of both SMACOF and classical scaling. 3. Ex. 3 in problem 1 simply requires going over the phases of the convergence proof for SMACOF and explain all its phases. You're not missing out on anything. As always, if you're not sure, feel free to ask. Regards, The course staff. |

Recommended course | |
Hi All, For those of you looking for a course to take next semester, the following recommended course will be given which continues the topics discussed in the 236861 course into the realm of surface processing and numerical geometry of surfaces. Regards The Course Staff ----------------------------------------------------- Processing and analysis of geometric objects (given as Advanced topics in vision, image understanding, and computer vision 48921) The course is a self-contained comprehensive introduction to modern analysis, processing, and synthesis of geometric shapes, with a good balance between theory, numerical methods, and applications. The course will address problems such as deformation-invariant similarity and correspondence of shapes, similarity and correspondence of shapes with different topology, partial similarity and correspondence. A wide variety of topics will be covered, including: metric geometry as a model of rigid and non-rigid shapes, geometric invariants, approximation of geodesic distances, multidimensional scaling methods and their use for invariant representations of non-rigid shapes, spectral methods and the Laplace-Beltrami operator, intrinsic similarity of shapes and the Gromov-Hausdorff distances, extrinsic and intrinsic self-similarity and symmetry, shape spaces and calculus of shapes. One of the main emphases of the course will be on practical methods, which will be used in class and home assignments. Examples of applications from computer vision and pattern recognition, computer graphics, and geometry processing will be shown, including: 2D and 3D shape recognition, expression-invariant face recognition, texture mapping, morphing and animation. The course will be held on Thursdays, 12:30 - 14:30, Department of Electrical Engineering (Meyer building) The teacher is Dr. Michael Bronstein (http://www.cs.technion.ac.il/~mbron/) Grade will consist of home assignments (50%) and project (50%). Students will be able to choose the topic of their project, and are encouraged to bring a topic related to their research. For course syllabus and additional information, see http://tosca.cs.technion.ac.il/book/course_technion10.html or contact umbronatcs.technion.ac.il |

Clarification on HW5 | |
Hi All, 1. In problem 1, ex. 1, You need to find an algorithm for minimizing the function using majorization, show that the iterations there indeed majorize the function, and use it to find the minimizer of this function. At the end, it should include a numerical algorithm + implementation and show it converges to a minimum of this function. 2. Regarding GAC and Chan-Vese, you should implement each of them anyhow. By saying "both", we mean a functional which sums the two (need not be equal weights - choose whatever works best, but it should not be difficult on this image). Compare the results from these 3 possibilities. Regards, The course staff |

Clarifications | |
Hi all, A few clarifications: 1. In HW2, where it says "stability", unless otherwise written, assume unconditional stability. This is the same as taking C(N) in the definition of stability to be a constant, or that the iterations are contracting. This is unlike the various forms of weak stability mentioned in class. 2. Tutorial #3 has been updated to clarify that. 3. In the shear invariants question, the Tangent and Normal are not necessarily the Euclidean ones, as discussed in chapter 2. - The curvature, for a certain invariant, is the simplest invariant differential quantity other than the arclength. It does not have to be derived in the exact same manner of subsection 2.2.2 in the book. - When looking for the arclength, note that it should be defined so as to allow re-parameterization of the curve by an integral, and must be invariant to the initial parametrization of the curve, as well as the transformation group involved. HW2 published, guidelines | |
Hi All, HW2, on numerical schemes and differential geometry, has been published. Please, submit all the files (solution, well-documented Matlab functions, and test scripts) in an archive (zip, tar, rar). Give it a meaningful name, i.e. your ID number or name. Also, make sure that you state your name and ID in the solution itself, and that the solution is clearly written. Note the submission deadline! Since no late submission policy was announced, we won't discard the 1st exercises submitted after the deadline without approval. From now on, if you need an extension - approach us in advance, and state that you were given an extension. If you submit the exercise late without approval, we will: - Take off 5 points for each late day; up to 3 days. - Grade 0 exercises submitted after more than 3 days after the deadline. Regards, The course stuff |

Clarifications on HW 1 | |
Hi All, Two clarifications regarding the HW: 1. In problem 2, subproblem 1, you may have to guess classes of functions and prove solutions, as we did in class. 2. In problem 2, subproblem 2, we're not looking for the optimal solution, but rather a dependence of u(x) on "the rest" of the function -- z is merely an auxiliary variable. At the end we're looking for an expression that will allow us to run an iterative scheme. It is true that a constant function may solve the functional - but it is less relevant from our point of view, for reasons we'll explain later on. You are required to find a quite elegant expression of u(x) as dependent on u(z) - the reason we consider them as different functions is that we would like to keep the u(z) part from the previous iterations.
