HW1 - Clarifications | |

I understand HW1 is not too easy, and I would like to clarify a few points: (1) You are not expected to give a "court-proof" or "mathematical proof" for your analysis. Seeing that (a) a certain function is called; (b) certain conditions are met in an entrance to a function, and (c) something happens in the code when these conditions are met - is sufficient explanation if the "something" explains the difference you see. If there is a knob in the kernel or a common tools (e.g., in binutils) that can improve performance, it is also a very good supporting explanation for the problem. (2) While certain micro-architectural events (e.g., cache misses) can be partial cause of the experienced slowdown, they are not the root-cause and even not a major intermediate reason. We might have not covered all the architectural reasons that are involved in the slowdown - specifically in question 1. Give your best explanation and see if you can make back-of-the-envelope computation to support it. |

The slides for Lectures 4-5. Clarification: One question I was asked during the lecture was how does MADV_REMOVE, which "drops" all changes to memory (similarly to MADV_DONTNEED) but also affects shared mappings is safe. The answer is that write permission is required before doing so ( https://elixir.bootlin.com/linux/v6.9.7/source/fs/open.c#L305 ). If the writer has such write permissions, it can anyhow overwrite whatever changes others have done. |
