I am getting a continuous stream of questions re/ the exam. Unfortunately I cannot dedicate enough time to give detailed response to all of them. I will hold reception hour(s) before the exam, and you will have the opportunity to ask all these questions.
If, however, you have appeal to submit, do not wait until the reception hours and SUBMIT the appeal without consulting with me/TAs. As written, E-mail appeals WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED.

| Exam A - Appeals | For those who got points deducted for marking 6-B (answer B on question 6) in Exam-A - Please appeal, as 6-B is a correct answer.
_All_ appeals must be submitted in a organized manner to Nadav's mailbox (on the fifth floor) until 14/3.

| Moed A grades are available | Moed A grades are available.
It is very disappointing that 60% failed the exam. We added a factor:
final_grade=exam_grade*100/86+5.
This factor normalizes to the highest grade and adds 5 more points.
The scans will be available online soon - we transferred the exams to the secretary today.
Appeals should be submitted within 1 week from the moment the scans become available online.

| Clarification on Causal consistency model | Today in the lecture the last example was partially correct. I will rewrite it here for clarity.
Reminder: we described the situation when P1 sends M1 to everyone, P2 responds with M2 to everyone, but some processes get M2 before M1.
This scenario can be modeled by the following program: ( assume all variables are initialized to zeros)
P1: W1 X 1
P2: R2 X 1, W2 Y 1
P3: R3 Y 1, R3 X 0
P4: R4 X 1, R4 Y 0
"-> " sign denotes "happened before" relation.
Clearly W1 X1->R2 X 1->W2 Y 1, thus W1 X 1 -> W2 Y 1
Consider P3.
If R3 Y 1, then W2 Y 1 -> R3 Y 1.
If R3 X 0, then R3 X 0 -> W1 X 1
But according to the partial order of P3 R3 Y 1 -> R3 X 0, thus W2 Y 1 -> R3 Y1 -> R3 X 0 -> W1 X 1, so W2 Y 1-> W1 X 1, which contradicts the causal relation.
So there is no way to obtain a legal (in the causal order) serialization without reordering events in the same process, hence the program above is not causally consistent.
Note that Y and X are two different variables (unlike all other examples in the lecture slides).

Feel assured enough to submit your homework after you executed them successfully on any multicore environment such as you home (or lab) computer.

For that matter - reset was performed to the server.
Make sure your processes actually die after you finish executing - running 'ps' and killing java instances ('kill process_num') once they are not needed. |
