| Exam Grades... | Shalom all,
The exams have been checked. The exam grade and the final grade are visible from GR++. For your convenience the final grade of the course (after adding the HW average) is also added here below.
For those who wish to make an appeal. You are more than welcome to, but be absolutely sure what it is you are appealing about. Appeals like, “I think I should get more points for the question” will not be considered favorably. On the other hand, an appeal where you actually hard coded you solution into C, and ran it, and saw that the results are good, will be taken seriously.
Deadline for appeals is in two weeks - until the 10/10/05. Appeals after this deadline will not be accepted.
We hope you have enjoyed the course.
Good luck in the continuation,
Sincerely yours

| How to appeal... | Shalom all,
Since several students have asked me, here is how you can make an appeal:
Step 1. Take a copy of your exam from the CS secretary (you order a copy of the exam in the undergraduate website).
Step 2. You read your exam solution and the published exam solution and compare the two.
Step 3. If you see a difference between the two but still think that your solution is correct, then please repeat Step 2 several more times.
Step 4. If you still think that your solution is correct then please take a TOFES IRUR from the CS secretary and write a good argument why it is you think that your solution is correct.
Step 5. You put the exam+TOFES IRUR (stapled together) in Eran Eden’s box on floor 5 until the 1st of August.
After the 1st of August we will check all the appeals. The results will be returned to the secretary.
A little Tip: I have already received an appeal saying “I am a good C programmer. Therefore I feel that I should have gotten much more in the exam” - unfortunately, such an appeal will not accepted.
Best regards

| Grades of test | Dear students,
The grades have been published in the GR. Those of you who signed up to get direct e-mails of grades from GR got their exam grade via e-mail. Those who didn’t need to wait until it is published in the undergraduate website (hopefully in the coming day or two). The CS secretary is not aloud to publish your grades on the bulletin board (for reasons of privacy).

| Final grades published | Shalom all,
You can stop eating your finger nails - the exam grades as well as the final grades of the course have been published. They can be viewed from GR or tomorrow you will be able to see them in your undergraduate grades.
Exam solution:
For your convenience we published the exam solution in the website under course material --> Tips for the exam.
Regarding appeals:
We have made every effort to check the exam fairly; so before you decide to appeal please spend time and thought and be sure that you have a strong and solid argument. Appeals such as, you took off 3 points and I think this is too much will absolutely not be accepted. If, on the other hand, you have made a beautiful and correct answer, but for some reason the exam checker misidentified the beauty and elegance of your correct solution and did not give you any points for it, then by all means, please make an appeal.
The deadline for appeals is 1st of August (more than two weeks from the day, which the exam was handed in). No appeal will be accepted after this date.
Getting a copy of the exam is done in the usual way (through the undergraduate website).
To those of you who have passed Moed A, we hope you enjoyed the course (or at least did not suffer from it to much). Those who didn’t pass, or have not done Moed A - see you in Moed B.
Best regards
Course staff.

| Using global and static variables in recursion | In the test, if you are asked to write a recursive function, you are not allowed to define variables outside the function; hence you cannot use global variables.
Regarding static variables in recursion. We highly recommend that you don’t use them in recursion! (You can use them if you insist but be 100% sure that you are not making a mistake). One typical problem with static variables and recursion happens when you try to call a function from main more then once. The value of the static variable from previous recursion call is remembered , which often leads to a bug.
Bottom line: it will be much easier for you to solve the recursion questions in the exams if you don’t use static variables in the recursion.
Best regards

Try to solve the exam questions at home by yourself, before you come to class, and this way I can give you feedback on your solutions.

| DAF EZER for the exam | Shalom All,
A few students asked regarding a DAF EZER for the exam. In previous years there was been a DAF EZER that was handed out in the exam. This year we decided not to give hand it. The reason is that we feel that it does not contain any information that might actually help you solve the exam.
If you wish to look at it anyhow, please go to the link of previous semester – you can download it from there.
Good luck,

| Permission to delay submission of #7 | Shalom all,
I have received several letters asking for postponement of hw #7 submission because of the SIVUG exam in physics. The problem with postponing this hw is that the hw checkers will not have enough time to return your hw before the exam.
Therefore, you have the following two options:
1) You can hand the HW on its original due date, (23/6 at 12:00) - we will make every effort to check it and return the correction to you before the exam.
2) You can delay the handing in of the HW until the 26/6 at 12:00 but the HW will not be checked before the exam (there will be no delay after this date).
It is up to you to decide, though we highly recommend you to hand in the HW on original date.
Good luck with the SIVUG exam,
Eran

Please visit the FAQ questions for HW clarifications: http://www.cs.technion.ac.il/~szefko/
Also, notice that in the FAQ, the inputs and outputs that should be printed and handed in with the hw, are written.
Good luck,

| Hw #5 deadline postponed to 6/6. | Shalom all,
Due to several exams that fall near the submission of hw 5 (2/6), and the requests of many students we agree to postpone the hw #5 submission deadline to 6/6.
However, the publication date of the two other hws in the course (hw #6 and hw #7) will not change (hw #6 will be published on 2/6 and hw #7 on 9/6) so we highly recommend to all of you who can meet the original dead line to do so in order to avoid pressure at the end of the course.
Best regards

| Copying in hw... | Dear students,
Unfortunately, there have been several instances of cheating and copying in hw #2.
We take these cheatings very seriously because:
1. We are making every effort to make the hw fair and reasonable and therefore we take it personally when someone cheats.
2. We don’t like to spend our time checking hw that have been copied.
3. Since course policy favors saving paper (and helping preserve the Amazon forests) we despise unnecessary waste of paper (wasted on the copied work).
4. Those who copy get high grades at the expense of those who don’t cheat (for example they prevent a factor in case of a difficult test/hw)
We have no problem with different pairs consulting and talking with one another.
We do have a problem with 7 people that copy paste the same work 4 times.
We do have a problem with 5 people copy pasting the same work 3 times and only changing the names of several variables. We do have a problem with someone who copies the output page while his program produces a different output, (and by the way it is very easy to catch this…). All of the above are not theoretical examples…
To sum it up, all the students who copied in hw #2 were notified and received a 0 for that hw. Hw #3 of these students was checked, and if they cheated in that hw as well, they received 0 for all the hw assignments in the course. We think these are very light punishments and if we encounter people cheating in the hw or test in the future we will deal with it more harshly.
We really hope we will not need to deal with this issue anymore in the course. If you need help in the hw, please don’t hesitate to come to the tutor reception hours and we will be happy to help you.
Good luck in the continuation of the course.

| How to see your hw grades | Shalom all,
The grades of the first hw will be published tomorrow (in the afternoon).
You can pick up your hw from the room near the computer science secretary.
In order to view your grades on the internet you have two options:
(1) If you have access to a computer in the computer science faculty then all you need to do is:
-Go to the course website,
-Press the Grades button,
-Put your id and your undergraduate password
and…
Walla! You can see your grades.
This will not work if you are using a computer outside the computer science faculty.
(2) You can still see your grade by getting it sent automatically to your e-mail (and SMS). How is this done?
-Go to course webpage,
-Press Grades button,
-Press Settings,
-Press Auto update
-Mark a ‘V’ under "Email Grades Update"
and…
Walla – the grade will be sent directly to your e-mail.
You need to do this only one time and after that until the end of the course all your grades will be automatically sent to your mail.
Good luck
